Fort Stockton man arraigned in Slater's death
A Fort Stockton man was arraigned on a capital murder charge Tuesday afternoon in connection with the shooting death of Drew Slater Friday morning, according to Fort Stockton Police Department chief Juan Castro.
David Michael Myers, formerly of Midland and believed to be originally from Waco, was arraigned at the Pecos County Law Enforcement Center by Municipal Court Judge Sylvia Hernandez. Bond was set at $500,000.
Myers was arrested in Midland late Saturday evening on charges of unauthorized used of a motor vehicle and running a red light, according to the Midland County Jail. He was transported back to Fort Stockton Monday evening.
Myers was named a person of interest in the shooting Friday evening and area law enforcement agencies were alerted that it was believed that Myers was driving Slater's brown 2005 Ford F-250 pick-up.
Slater, 25, an employee of Longfellow Ranch Partners LP, was shot several times mid-Friday morning at his residence at 1505 W. Hornbeck, Castro said. A 9-1-1 call was received at 11:48 a.m.
FSPD officers responded and were at the scene several minutes later, where they found Slater dead. FSPD officers and Pecos County Sheriff's Office deputies then blocked off Hornbeck west of Rio as they began working the crime scene.
According to Castro, the Department of Public Safety, the Texas Rangers and crime scene investigators from the Pecos Police Department assisted at the scene Friday.
Slater's body was transported Friday to Lubbock for an autopsy that was scheduled Monday afternoon. Late Tuesday afternoon, Castro said they were still awaiting preliminary results.
Myers is believed to have lived in Fort Stockton for about four years, Castro said. He had been briefly employed at IHOP previously and had been acquainted with Slater through his employment there.
Myers remains in the Pecos County Law Enforcement Center.
A memorial service for Slater took place Monday afternoon at First Presbyterian Church. Funeral arrangements were pending, but the services are scheduled to be private, according to a family spokesman.
