Oglesby tourney set for Sept. 18
Former Pecos County Appraisal District chief appraiser John Oglesby had friends far and wide across the state of Texas.
Oglesby died of cancer more than a decade ago, but many of those friends still come together in his memory to help Oglesby's two sons: Andrew and Jordan.
They'll reunite once again Sept. 18 at Desert Pines Golf Course in Fort Stockton for the 10th Annual John Oglesby Memorial Golf Tournament.
"People come from all over the state to play in the tournament," said tournament co-organizer Ann Stapp, who worked with Oglesby at the appraisal district.
She said that several golfers from the Pecos area regularly participate because Oglesby formerly lived in Pecos. Stapp added that many of the participants in the tournament are from the oil and gas industry in the state, and were acquainted with Oglesby through his work with the appraisal district.
Money raised by the tournament funds scholarships for Andrew and Jordan, according to Stapp, who works with Reagan County Appraisal District chief appraiser Byron Bitner to run the tournament.
"John was an avid golfer," Stapp remembered. "He loved the game."
So, it was only natural to found the tournament when Stapp and Bitner sought an avenue to fund the Oglesby sons' higher education.
Andrew, who graduated from Fort Stockton High School, went on to attend Wayland Baptist University in Plainview and graduated with a degree in mass communications and English, according to Stapp. He's now an audio/video coordinator for a church.
Jordan is a senior at FSHS this year, she said.
Stapp said the tournament plans to continue after Jordan graduates from college. She said the scholarship funds will be allocated annually to a member or members of the FSHS boys and girls golf teams.
Registration is slated for 9 a.m. Sept. 18, with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.
The tournament will be a four-person scramble. The entry fee is $50 and same-day registration will be permitted.
The entry fee includes green fees, cart rental, mulligan, prizes and a meal after the tournament.
