Ramirez takes aim at medals

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND - Fort Stockton Police Department officer Roberto Ramirez won gold and bronze medals at the Texas Police Athletic Federation Games June 11-15.

Ramirez won a gold medal in the Junior Level (ages 18-29) in the biathlon competition at Port Isabel Detention Center in Bayview.
The biathlon consists of 1 1-2 miles of running split into three segments of one-half mile. During the two stops between running segments, the officer must fire six shots each from 25 meters and then fire 12 shots from 25 meters after the completion of the third one-half mile run.

Only duty weapons are allowed for the competition and competitors may shoot from the standing, kneeling, sitting and/or prone positions.

Ramirez finished third in the karate fighting event in the Junior Level (ages 18-29).

Ramirez has been with the Fort Stockton Police Department since September 2006. Prior to Fort Stockton, Ramirez worked as a deputy with the Culbertson County Sheriff's Department in Van Horn.

Ramirez is a 2001 graduate of J.M. Hanks High School in El Paso. Following a stint in the U.S. Army, Ramirez completed the Sul Ross Law Enforcement Academy in Alpine.

Ramirez has two sons, Nathan and Zarek.
