H.F. "Lefty" Walters
Magnolia, Arkansas
H. F. "Lefty" Walters, 80 of Magnolia, Arkansas died Sunday, January 20, 2008 in the Magnolia Hospital.
He was born July 10, 1927 in Cameron, Texas to the late Grover and Vada (Tucker) Walters.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Billye Moore Jones Colby and brother, Taylor Moore.
Lefty's education began in Cameron, then to Houston, Center Point, Texas, and graduated high school in Norton, Ohio. He attended TCU in Fort Worth, Texas on a baseball scholarship as a pitcher, and was drafted and served his country in France and Germany during World War II. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army Corp. in Ft. Dix, New Jersey. In 1947, he returned to TCU, where he graduated in 1950, and was recruited to the White Sox Farm Team.
He began his career with El Paso Natural Gas Company as a measurement technician, but served primarily as Coach to the Jal Gasers, an independent baseball league in Jal, New Mexico. In 1961, he was employed by Transwestern Pipeline, retired from Enron and moved to Magnolia in 1987.
Joining the First Christian Church in Houston in 1939, he has served as Elder, Deacon, CMF President, Board Chairman, Sunday School Teacher and Chairman of Stewardship, Worship, Evangelist, and Membership. In 2004 Asbury United Methodist Church became his home.
Lefty will be remembered as an avid golfer, playing gin rummy, little league umpire, and a backer and supporter of high school golf teams.
He is survived by his wife of fifty two years, Joyce Westbrook Walters; son, Mark Allen Walters and wife Elayne of Ft. Worth, Texas; two daughters, Diane Cummings and husband Patrick, of Sherman, Texas, and Tara Dailey of Grapevine, Texas; seven grandchildren, Kory James and Katy Scarlett Cummings, Brittany Faith and Blake Daniel Dailey, Justin Palmer, Cameron Bachman, and Easton Walters; sister-in-law, Virginia Franklin of Magnolia, Arkansas; brother-in-law, Bobby Westbrook of El Dorado, Arkansas; and many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 10:00 am at Asbury United Methodist Church with Bro. Bill Odom officiating. Interment was at New Hope Cemetery under the direction of Lewis Funeral Home, Inc. of Magnolia. Visitation was held on Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Pallbearers were Pat Dillard, Vernon Bell, Jim Shaw, Billy Cheatham, George Stewart, and Ken Estes.
