FS Garden Club tours Marathon Gardens

On Oct. 9, the Fort Stockton Garden Club gathered at the library and the carpooled to the Marathon Gardens.

What a trip! It rained almost all the way down and we had water crossings to splash in. It was a perfect day - cool and cloudy.
The Marathon Gardens are worth a trip. Desert plants, gazebos, paths, grass areas, ponds fountains, an orchard, a grape vineyard and even a golf green are arranged in the most beautiful, most amazing, most impressive design.

Rip Rinkle did the design and led our tour. His helpers were Shawn Childs and Michael McCorkle.

These men really worked at making hearty plants that grow in our area create a beautiful, restful garden. The work is changing along to include new areas and sometimes plants are changed to improve the design.

The group continued the trip with lunch in Alpine. Then a stop at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center that is located closer to Fort Davis.

Their water storage system is extensive and a very good example. We also saw lots of cacti in the green house and identified desert trees and plants along the trail.
