Friends and colleagues said a fond farewell to Nanda Bryan Thursday, September 27 who retired after 27 years with the probation department.
Bryan began her career November 1979, with the Permian Basin Adult Probation Department as a juvenile and adult probation officer for Upton and Reagan counties where she was both a probation officer and a secretary.
At that time there were ten employees covering eight counties, Pecos, Brewster, Jeff Davis, Presidio, Crockett and Sutton as well as Upton and Reagan.
The Texas Adult Probation Commission (TAPC) had just been formed, and the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission (TJPC) was not yet formed. Bryan watched as these state agencies were formed, and became one of the first Juvenile Probation Officers certified under the new Commission.
In November 1984, Bryan moved to Fort Stockton as a supervisor. She became Assistant Director in 1986 under Juan Hernandez.
Bryan has been a member of TPA, TCA, WT Juvenile Chiefs and the West Texas Adult Chiefs.
"I have been so blessed," Bryan said. "I will miss all my friends here. They are like a second family," she said.
Prior to joining the Probation department, Bryan earned a BS in criminology and corrections from Sam Houston State University in May 1973.
She worked for four years at the Texas Youth Facility in Pyote as a caseworker when Pyote was a home for dependent and neglected children.
Bryan plans to return to her hometown, Austin, at least for a while. "I've always thought that I would eventually retire to San Angelo," she said.
"Nanda has been a real asset to this organization," said Juan Hernandez, Chief of the Probation Department, "and she will be missed."
