Tax free weekend begins tomorrow
By Sharon Roosevelt

Pioneer Staff Writer

Fort Stockton families get a break from state and local sales taxes on August 17, 18 and 19 as they gear up for back-to-school. The state provides an annual tax-free weekend for shoppers.
Vanessa Cardwell, manager of the Fort Stockton Wal-Mart, said, "We will be ready, fully stocked and fully staffed."

Beall's manager, Teri Pando, explained that her store will be open extra hours that weekend. "Friday, August 17 and Saturday, August 18, we will be open from eight a.m. to nine p.m., and on Sunday, August 19 from eleven a.m. to seven p.m."

The law exempts most clothing and footwear priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend.

Backpacks under $100 and used by elementary and secondary students have been added to the list of items that are exempt. The new exemption defines a backpack as a pack with straps one wears on the back. Backpacks with wheels, provided they can also be worn on the back like a traditional backpack, and messenger bags are also exempt.

The exemption does not include items that are reasonably defined as luggage, briefcases, athletic/duffle/gym bags, computer bags, purses or framed backpacks. Ten or fewer backpacks can be purchased tax-free at one time without providing an exemption certificate to the seller.

Here is a partial list of items that will be exempt. If you have questions, you can contact the local stores, or the State Comptroller's Office.
