Ida Mae Hathaway Cunningham, St. Louis, Mo.
Ida Mae Hathaway Cunningham, St. Louis, Mo., died Friday, June 29, 2007, at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Louis. She suffered a broken hip in a fall Friday, June 22, and while in the hospital she developed pneumonia and her kidneys failed.
Born in Harlingen, she was the youngest of four sisters and three brothers. She was the daughter of long time Harlingen residents, James F. and Nora Farr Hathaway. She graduated from La Feria High School, Class of 1931, and attended Howard Payne University in Brownwood.
Ida Mae and Guy Hoyette Cunningham were united in marriage in Denton, May 8, 1939. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in 1999. They were the parents of two sons, whom they raised in Fort Stockton. They owned and operated a hardware store and "Cunningham Furniture and Appliances" in Fort Stockton before retiring in 1977 to the Lake Buchanon Area near Burnet, in Central Texas. They later moved to San Antonio to be near their youngest son.
She was well known and widely respected by her family and friends as a spunky and feisty lady, a successful businesswoman and a good friend, quick to help others. She joined the Weslaco United Methodist Church in 1931 and has always been a Methodist woman in Faith.
Ida Mae is preceded in death by her husband, Guy Hoyette Cunningham in October of 1999, and by her youngest son, Terry Lee in May 1999 due to complications from cancer surgery.
She is survived by her oldest son, James Guy Cunningham and his wife, C. Jean Hillin, St. Louis, Mo.; her grandchildren, Guy Neyland Cunningham and his wife, Holly Bergeson; and Jason Michael Cunningham and his wife, Tanya Richard, all of St. Louis; and James Gregory Cunningham and his wife, Kasie Kinnaman, Indianapolis, Ind. Her twin five and a half year old great granddaughters, Isabel Danner and Genevieve Mae Cunningham, St. Louis, also survive her.
Graveside services were held Friday, July 6, in Restlawn Memorial Park, La Feria.
Interment was at Restlawn Memorial Park, La Feria.
Arrangements were under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
