Different kinds of peer pressure
By Nicole Lujan
In D.A.R.E., I learned about the different kinds of peer pressure. I also learned that drugs can hurt your body, mind, and future.
There are three kinds of peer pressure. The first kind is friendly peer pressure, which is when a friend pushes you to pass a test or win a race. The second kind is tough peer pressure. Tough peer pressure s when a bully pushes you to do something bad, like drugs. The third kind is personal peer pressure, which is when you push yourself to do something.
Tobacco is usually the gateway drug, or first drug, to be used by young people who start using alcohol, marijuana and harder drugs. Nicotine is the addictive drug found in cigarettes and other tobacco products. People who began to smoke at an early age, are more likely to develop severe levels of nicotine addiction; compared to those who start at a later age. Smoking is the leading cause of heart disease. Smoking also causes lung cancer and tooth decay.
Alcohol is the drug that is found in many drinks, for example: beer, wine, and liquor. This drug causes dizziness, poor coordination, and slurred speech. Alcohol also causes heart disease, kidney failure, and cirrhosis of the liver.
Some people sniff very strong substances like spray paint, plastic cement, fingernail polish-remover, and cleaning solvents, to get high. These substances are called inhalants. Inhalants cause dizziness, heart disease and brain damage. A person can die from just one time of using inhalants.
Marijuana is an illegal drug. Anyone who sells or grows this drug will be arrested. Marijuana causes short-term memory loss and affects the body's development.
Drugs can affect your future by not letting you study and hurting your relationships with friends and family. If you don't study, you can't graduate or go to college. This will keep you from getting a good job. When a person chooses to use drugs, they stop caring for others and only care about drugs. The worst way drugs will affect your future is death.
I pledge not to do drugs, because I want to have a healthy mind and body; and I also want to have a great future!
